Captaincy General of Guatemala (present-day Guatemala)
First half of the 18th century
Wood, tortoiseshell, and mother-of-pearl
123 × 88 cmThis exceptional Viceroyal Guatemalan Mirror represents a remarkable example of the refined marquetry technique combining tortoiseshell and mother-of-pearl, developed in various artistic centers of Central America during the eighteenth century. The wooden structure is covered with tortoiseshell plaques into which delicate vegetal motifs and scrolling designs in mother-of-pearl are inlaid, creating a striking contrast between the dark background and the iridescent brilliance of the shell. Objects of this kind reflect the complex circulation of materials, techniques, and ornamental models between Asia, New Spain, and the broader Hispanic world through Pacific trade networks, while also demonstrating the high technical mastery achieved by Viceroyal workshops specializing in the production of luxurious furniture.
