They traditionally accompanied the processional cross in Christian rituals, the most important procession in Latin America being, without a doubt, Corpus Christi. All parishes, confraternities, and religious orders that took part in this procession carried their own processional crosses, flanked by candlesticks or lanterns, which are characterized by having a glass enclosure that protected the candles from the wind. These lanterns could be carried by hand or mounted on wooden or silver poles, depending on the rank and solemnity of the procession.Read more
