This box represents Barniz de Pasto at its highest level of refinement. Built in luminous layers of mopa-mopa resin and metal foil, its surface rivals Asian lacquer in brilliance while remaining entirely American in origin. The density of ornament and precision of the motifs reveal the hand of a master workshop from the technique’s golden age. Objects of this quality are exceptionally rare. Preserved in remarkable condition, the box stands as a jewel of viceregal craftsmanship and a tangible witness to one of the most sophisticated decorative traditions of the Americas.Read Essay
