This extraordinary eight-panel folding screen, created in China during the late Ming dynasty, is an early and remarkable example of the artistic exchange that flourished in Macao following the establishment of the Portuguese settlement in 1557.

Its richly colored landscape unfolds across a vast mountainous valley, populated by an extraordinary array of animals, birds, mythical creatures, and luxuriant vegetation. At its center, a grotto framed by flowing water and a natural bridge evokes the Taoist concept of Dongtian (洞天), or Grotto-Heaven: a hidden paradise within the sacred mountains, inhabited by immortals and symbolizing a passage into the supernatural world. The simultaneous presence of the Sun and Crescent Moon further reinforces this cosmological vision, while the dragons, Fenghuang and Qilin embody auspiciousness, harmony, and prosperity.

Equally remarkable is the screen’s decorative language. Its elaborate gilded borders and embossed clouds combine Chinese artistic traditions with Japanese screen-making influences and European Mannerist ornament, revealing the sophisticated visual culture that emerged in Macao as a meeting point between East and West.

More than a decorative masterpiece, this screen is a compelling testament to the movement of artistic ideas, techniques, and beliefs across continents at the dawn of global trade. Its complex iconography preserves the depth of Chinese cosmological thought within an exceptional work created for an international world.
