The Virgin of Guápulo is depicted in a large, conical mantle that conceals her body, leaving only head and hands visible, with a coral rosary emphasizing devotion. The Christ Child wears a similar garment, and both figures are crowned with decorative bows and large cuffs, dating the image to the late Habsburg–early Bourbon period. Originating from the Virgin of Guadalupe, the devotion spread through Diego de Ocaña to Ecuador, Cusco, Bolivia, and beyond. Some versions show influence from Diego Quispe Tito. The Sanctuary of Guápulo, founded in 1620, became a center of evangelization and inspired paintings by Miguel de Santiago depicting associated miracles.
