Miguel Cabrera (Mexico, 1695-1768)
The Virgin and Child, Circa 1751–1768
Oil on canvas
123.5 × 99.2 cm
Though unsigned, this painting is a clear example of the work of Miguel Cabrera, the leading painter of 18th-century New Spain, known as “the American Michelangelo.” The weeping Virgin and Child and the small cross held by Christ transform an intimate domestic scene into a meditation on the future Passion and the sorrow of Mary. Latin inscriptions drawn from Scripture reinforce themes of loss, prophecy, and redemption, while the humble interior—complete with sewing implements and unfinished embroidery—adds symbolic depth. Technical and stylistic features characteristic of Cabrera’s mature period, including refined perspective, impastoed highlights, and a distinctive halo of stars, support an attribution dating the work to between 1751 and 1768.
