Oil and mother-of-pearl on wooden panel
As a variation of the Tota Pulchra—inspired by 16th-century graphic and pictorial models—the representation of the Virgin in the third enconchado is more closely aligned with the Immaculist model that emerged in 17th-century Spain, the country that played a leading role in promoting the belief in the Immaculate Conception. The exaltation of this dogma was reflected in all fields of Spanish literary and artistic creation. Artists such as Diego Velázquez, José de Ribera, Francisco de Zurbarán, and Juan Carreño de Miranda, among others, produced works of great beauty, some of which are considered among the finest of their careers.
