The composition of this relief is inspired by Quattrocento representations of the Madonna and Child, influenced by Donatello’s works. This iconography, first seen in Florentine funerary monuments, spread to Spain through Italian artists and Spanish sculptors trained in Italy, such as Alonso Berruguete and Diego de Siloé. Felipe Bigarny, a key figure of the Spanish Renaissance, blended classical ideals with religious themes. His alabaster works, like those in Burgos and Toledo Cathedrals, exhibit his refined technique and emotional depth. This relief shares stylistic elements with his known sculptures, suggesting his authorship.
