Provenance

Spinola family, Castello di Pasturana, Piedmont (19th century); sold to Emilia Balduino on 13 June 1933; by descent to the present owner

This painting portrays a solemn and elegant female figure, dressed in a silver-white, floral-embroidered dress partially covered by a dark coat with slits, highlighting her social status. She stands next to a table with a dark tablecloth, gently caressing a pet dog, a symbol of marital fidelity. Her rosy, fresh face is framed by a white ruff collar, and she wears minimal yet sophisticated jewelry, including a pearl earring, a long pearl necklace, and a ring on her left little finger, complemented by suede leather gloves. An elderly maid, with a sun-darkened face and wrapped head, stands to her right, gazing at her mistress with a hardened expression, capturing a documentary-like domestic moment. The young lady's direct gaze towards the viewer and her composed demeanor emphasize her aristocratic stature, likely of mid-level nobility.
