This Virgin and Child presents a Nordic aesthetic connection, which, together with its stylistic and technical details regarding thoroughness and  meticulousness, leads us to associate it with Gil de Siloé’s entourage.

Just a few biographical details are known about this sculptor before he settled in Burgos, the city where he arrived, like many other Flemish and Northern European artists, during the reign of Queen Isabella I (1474-1504). They came to Castile lured by the royal and noble patronage that favored artistic creation and activity, particularly in Burgos and Toledo. Active trade with the Netherlands brought about economic prosperity for the city of Burgos, promoting artistic exchanges between Burgos and the Nordic workshops. Therefore, many sculptors, painters and architects arrived in Castile looking for a job, including Flemish artists, very much to the taste of Queen Isabella.
