FROM LATE GOTHIC ART TO THE ITALIAN MANNERISM IN ALABASTER

Gil de Siloé and Bartolomé Ordéñez
Álvaro Pascual Chenel, 2017

This book presents two exquisite sculptures made in alabaster. The first one was built at the end of the fifteenth century and the second one, at the beginning of the sixteenth century. Even though they are almost contemporary, a Late Gothic or Elizabethan Gothic style can clearly be perceived in the Virgin and Child by Gil de Siloé, who is an emblematic representative piece of that style. The Putti sculpture introduces us into a new world; the Spanish Renaissance with Italian influence, which produced this Mannerist work of art that is completely dramatic and pompous, whose figures portray forced unnatural postures.
